The second rule is to prevent direct contact with walls. Leave a narrow air gap around the stack so moisture cannot condense on the outside bags. A tightly packed corner against two walls is a slow-moving disaster. Your pellets need to breathe, quietly and consistently.

You should also protect the supply from sharp temperature changes and direct sunlight. A south-facing window that warms one side of a stack all day can cause condensation overnight. A stable, shaded and well-ventilated space with no obvious damp marks is worth far more than saving a few euros per tonne.

When you open a bag, cut it carefully rather than tearing it apart. The more fines you create through handling, the more you risk restricting the burner. Empty the hopper regularly rather than constantly adding new pellets on top. Old fines collect at the bottom like sludge and can eventually form a compact layer that starves the auger. Let us be honest: nobody really does this every day., but doing it once or twice a month can already make a real difference.

Keep an eye on the flame. A healthy burn produces a bright, lively flame, not a slow orange candle. Perhaps the next time a seller dismisses the age of a pallet, the discussion will not stop there. Perhaps more people will count not only the price per tonne, but also the nights of genuine comfort it provides.
