Guimarães and Portugal’s space economy

Guimarães has never been content with a limited place on the map. It did not accept one when it stood at the founding of Portugal, and it will not accept one today, as Portugal must decide whether it merely wants to consume technology or help create it.

The establishment of Portugal’s first optical satellite production and testing facility at the former Fábrica do Alto in Pevidém must be understood in that context. It is a significant local strategic investment with technological importance, and a national decision with a Guimarães address.

The Municipal Council I lead made a clear commitment to the people of Guimarães: to deliver and to transform. To honour the relationship of trust forged with residents. To develop Guimarães into a more competitive, more highly skilled, more cohesive area, better equipped to compete in the economies that matter. This facility is among the clearest and most demanding demonstrations of that ambition.

We are converting industrial heritage into technological capability; turning a former factory into an asset for the future; and making Pevidém and Guimarães a highly significant part of the space economy.

Fábrica do Alto: from industrial heritage to optical satellites

Fábrica do Alto is part of a shared history of work, industry and community. Now, however, the scale has changed and the horizon is new. In a place that once made products for the traditional industrial economy, optical satellites will now be built: satellites able to observe the Earth, generate data, support public decision-making, and serve civil protection, the environment, agriculture, spatial planning, security and research.

Today, the space economy is a critical element of modern sovereignty. Those who observe more effectively make better decisions. Those who command technology and innovation are less dependent on others.

That is why this project matters equally to Guimarães and to Portugal. We need highly skilled industry, applied science, businesses connected to international supply chains, and places that refuse to settle for resignation. Innovation must be treated as installed capability. The agreement with CEIIA, within the Guimarães Space Hub and in partnership with the University of Minho, brings together precisely what is most important: advanced education, applied research and industrialisation.

For the people of Guimarães, this achievement creates fresh opportunities for highly qualified young people. It means attracting businesses, investment and talent. It means broadening the municipality’s economic base without abandoning its productive identity. It means telling Guimarães that the future is not somewhere else: it is here.

We recognised an opportunity, brought partners together, made decisions and positioned Guimarães in an area of undeniable strategic importance to Portugal.
