Collectors are likely to seize the opportunity.

We are clearly not finished with The Lord of the Rings saga on the big screen. On 15 December 2027, The Hunt For Gollum, the next film in the franchise directed by Andy Serkis, will arrive in French cinemas. While waiting, and to pay tribute to the landmark universe created by J. R. R. Tolkien, Monnaie de Paris has chosen to introduce a new collection of commemorative coins.

A collecting opportunity

The renowned institution is marking the 25th anniversary of Peter Jackson’s first The Fellowship of the Ring film reaching cinemas.

These gold and silver pieces are available from its online shop, featuring numerous characters and references from the saga. Marc Schwartz, Chairman and Chief Executive of Monnaie de Paris, praised the initiative in a statement:

“It has already been 25 years since the first instalment of J.R.R. Tolkien’s great classic was masterfully adapted for the cinema by Peter Jackson. Like Dwarven smiths and Elven craftsmen, our teams have worked precious metal to engrave the iconic scenes from The Lord of the Rings trilogy for eternity. This collection demonstrates more than ever our wish to bring together different stories, both historical and fantastical, in order to reach a broad audience and introduce as many people as possible to the art of numismatics. Take up your sword, saddle your steed: Monnaie de Paris is taking you on a great adventure!”

Naturally, these pieces are primarily intended to give collectors something to enjoy. However, buying them could also prove useful as well as pleasurable. Some gold coins are priced at €285 and, although nothing is guaranteed, their limited run of just 10,000 copies could increase their value over the long term.

Monnaie de Paris showcases its craftsmanship

In any case, Monnaie de Paris has genuine expertise in this field. Its Chief Engraver, Joaquin Jimenez, highlighted this when he said:

“I have always been fascinated by the richness and complexity of the universe created by J. R. R. Tolkien. Having grown up reading his works, I developed a deep attachment over the years to the mythology of The Lord of the Rings. Today, it is a particularly special opportunity for Monnaie de Paris to create compositions using Tolkien’s legacy, and to adapt Peter Jackson’s characters and universe to a different, new and living medium.”
