Google has announced that its Gemini app has passed one billion users, while also revealing how people are using its AI. The company says that interactions have become especially popular, particularly among parents.

Gemini’s strong performance, everyday practical features and integration across Google’s ecosystem of services and products, including Android, have made it hugely popular. The Gemini app now has more than one billion monthly active users, putting it very close to ChatGPT’s user base. In its announcement, Google also provided several notable insights into how Gemini is being used.

The update shows, for instance, that Gemini’s voice interface is changing users’ daily routines. Some 63% of people using Google’s AI speak to Gemini directly, while certain users rely exclusively on voice mode. Google also says this voice interface is particularly valued by parents, who use it to save time in their everyday lives.

“Busy parents are 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks,” the Mountain View company writes. Voice use keeps users’ hands free while allowing the AI to carry out tasks on their behalf. Sharing a camera feed or screen content with Gemini is also becoming increasingly common. Indeed, one in five Gemini Live interactions uses this feature. Google says it is especially popular with DIY project enthusiasts and students.

Gemini has also won over Apple customers

On Android, Gemini has replaced Google Assistant as the default assistant. Within Google’s platform, Gemini can already work with more than 40 popular apps to improve productivity. However, Google’s figures indicate that its AI is also highly popular on Apple devices. Gemini already has more than 100 million active users on iOS.

Gemini’s image-generation feature is also attracting significant use. The Nano Banana models now create more than 150 million images every day. Google says Gemini’s creative tools are particularly popular with SMEs.

A milestone ahead of the update everyone is waiting for

Google has released these Gemini usage figures at a time when its AI team is under pressure to deliver. While OpenAI and Anthropic have already launched their latest and most powerful models, Google is still preparing the release of Gemini 3.6 Pro. The company recently also said that it is developing Gemini 4, an entirely new generation.

It should also be noted that the figures Google shared this week apply only to the Gemini app. Internet users also interact with its AI through other products and apps, including its search engine. Google has recently launched this Gemini integration on Google Search in France as well.

Also worth knowing: like Gemini, Gemma is proving highly popular

Google also develops open “Gemma” models that anyone can download and run locally, with some able to operate on a smartphone. According to the company, Gemma models have also just exceeded one billion downloads.
