Why John Ternus will replace Tim Cook as Apple CEO

Tim Cook will be replaced by John Ternus in September, a name that had already been mentioned in 2024. Here is why Apple’s current hardware chief was selected to become the company’s new CEO.

If you have checked social media this morning, you will already know that Tim Cook will no longer be Apple’s CEO in September. He will be succeeded by John Ternus, the company’s hardware chief, while Cook will take up the role of executive chairman of the board. For people who follow Apple news closely, the announcement comes as little surprise. Rumours about Tim Cook’s succession had been circulating since 2024, with John Ternus’s name appearing each time. Apple says this is the result of a carefully planned succession process, unanimously approved by its board of directors.

Why John Ternus became Apple’s preferred CEO candidate

Back in 2024, Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman portrayed the choice of the hardware chief as the obvious one. He reached that conclusion largely through a process of elimination. Tim Cook wanted an internal successor rather than an outside appointment. Among Apple’s executives, John Ternus was the person best suited to become Apple CEO. One of the most significant factors was his age: at 50, he could lead Apple for the next 15 years.

Apple needs a revolution, and John Ternus has the right profile

That is not the only reason. As he already runs the division responsible for the largest share of revenue - hardware products - he is among the best-qualified people to lead the whole organisation. John Ternus will also need to guide Apple through its shift towards AI and new product categories, including smart glasses. According to a Gurman report, his task will be to “put Apple back at the forefront as a product innovator” and “regain the determination that defined the Jobs era”.

By overseeing the transition of Macs to Apple Silicon chips, John Ternus has already demonstrated his abilities. “The Mac’s move to Apple Silicon was a system- and platform-level transition, effectively a brain transplant. *Within Apple, nobody has more experience than John Ternus in managing a change of that scale*. That is precisely what Apple needs as it prepares to enter the next phase of on-device AI,” analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said this morning. Thanks to the switch to Apple Silicon chips, the Cupertino company dramatically improved both the performance and battery life of its Macs, while disrupting the PC market.

Kuo also notes that another executive had been considered to succeed Tim Cook: Jeff Williams, who was COO and therefore Cook’s second-in-command. However, he announced his retirement in 2025.

What we think

Tim Cook successfully carried on Steve Jobs’s legacy and turned it into a cash machine. Apple now leads the smartphone market and is worth more than $4,000 billion at the time of writing. However, the company must now enter a new era and focus on areas such as AI and smart glasses. John Ternus has the right profile to lead Apple through this period of innovation.
