Galaxy Z Fold8 sales exceed Samsung expectations

The Galaxy Z Fold8 is selling so strongly that Samsung is reportedly having to order additional units beyond its original plans in order to meet demand.

Unveiled by Samsung in July, the Galaxy Z Fold8 has already set a pre-order record in Korea. Now, a media report suggests demand for the handset is so high that the Korean giant has opted to manufacture more devices than initially expected.

For context, Samsung launched three smartphones. The Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra retains the “book” format used by earlier Galaxy Fold models and offers the most powerful specification sheet. The Galaxy Z Fold8 instead uses a new “passport” format, while the Galaxy Z Flip8 continues to offer the “clamshell” folding-phone design.

Galaxy Z Fold8 pre-orders exceed expectations in Korea

The Z Fold8 appears to be the model attracting the greatest interest. According to Electronic Times, sales are expected to surpass Samsung’s forecasts, with the company reportedly having ordered an extra one million units to fulfil demand. It was previously reported that Samsung’s new generation of foldable smartphones had broken a Korean pre-order record. The previous record was held by the Galaxy Note 10 pre-orders in 2019.

A striking display and an original format

The Galaxy Z Fold8 represents a reworking of the foldable smartphone Samsung has offered since 2019. Its 4:3 “passport” format delivers a compact device while retaining a broad foldable screen. As we found in our review, it is pleasant to use every day. In terms of positioning, the Galaxy Z Fold8 sits between the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, whose prices start at €2,199, and the Galaxy Z Flip8, which belongs to an entirely different smartphone category.

Samsung has also made changes to its foldable display. A new technology makes the crease running down the centre almost imperceptible. This had been the chief criticism levelled at foldable smartphones. The remainder of the specification sheet fully meets the standards expected from the premium segment in 2026.

Premium specifications despite rising costs

As a result, despite the memory-chip crisis increasing smartphone costs and a starting price of €1,999, the Galaxy Z Fold8 is performing beyond the manufacturer’s expectations.

Samsung prepares to take on Apple

In any case, the Galaxy Z Fold8 puts Samsung in a strong position to face a new rival: Apple. Until now, the Cupertino company has shown no interest in foldable displays. However, numerous rumours suggest that, this September, Apple is expected to unveil its first ever foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Indeed, several sources indicate that this foldable iPhone could use the same passport format as the Galaxy Z Fold8. Its foldable display could also offer identical quality, since Samsung is among Apple’s display suppliers.
